Smart Motorways Are The Future

What is a Smart Motorway?
A smart motor way uses technology to actively manage the flow of traffic on the road, which is controlled from a regional traffic control centre. The control centre will monitor the flowing traffic carefully and activate changes in signs and speed limits which helps keep the traffic moving. Smart motorways are designed to increase the capacity of the road, without the expenses/inconvenience of widening the road, by either temporarily or permanently opening the hard shoulder to traffic. Highways England is responsible for smart motorways across England.
How to use a Smart Motorway
- Never drive in a lane closed by a red "X"
- Keep to the speed limit shown on the gantries
- A solid white line indicates the hard shoulder - don't drive in it unless directed
- A broke white line indicates a normal running lane
- If your vehicle experiences difficulties such as a warning light, exit the smart motorway immediately if possible
- Use the refuge areas for emergencies if there is no hard shoulder
- Put your hazard lights on if you break down
The work which is due to get started this week will involve:
- Converting the hard shoulder to create a fourth lane and changing the junctions to accommodate this
- Fitting new CCTV cameras and electronic information signs and signals
- Setting up emergency refuge areas
- Hardening the central reservation and installing a reinforced barrier to improve safety
- Putting in more than a mile of noise barriers in built up areas
- Replacing a footbridge at Burton Bank
- Upgrading the Dunston and Norton railway bridges
- Widening Creswell Viaduct and demolishing the Creswell Home Farm bridge
- Making minor improvements to Junction 15
A spokesperson for Highways England stated: "It is expected to be open to traffic by March 2022. The work will mean there will be an additional lane for traffic, increasing capacity to reduce congestion, more technology on the road to manage incidents and more reliable journeys".
